Wow! I cannot believe it is the end of these blogs
already, although it will be one more weight lifted off my shoulder, I realized
there are so many other superstitions I still have not covered. Superstitions
such as, opening an umbrella indoors or cracking a mirror
. Not everyone believes in these things but I feel it can be fun to go along with the sayings. Lately I have been into palm reading, which I consider a superstition as well because it is something some people can believe in, or they can think it is absolutely insane. In the Merriam Webster dictionary the definition of a superstition is: a belief or way of behaving that is based on fear of the unknown and faith in magic or luck : a belief that certain events or things will bring good or bad luck.
a : a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the
unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation
b : an irrational abject attitude of mind toward the supernatural,
nature, or God resulting from superstition
Although
palm reading is not based on fear or saving myself from bad luck, but it is
considered a belief and an abject attitude of mind toward the supernatural,
nature or God resulting. It is not anything that is related to demons or
anything negative, it is just something personal.

All in all,
in some way I could guarantee everyone is superstitious in some way. Whether it is, knocking on wood, keeping a
lucky coin in your pocket, or doing a repetitive routine before any game. For
instance, whenever I am going up to bat for a baseball game, I push the sand
around with my feet, sing a bat a bit and then get in position. I always found
that doing this would bring me more luck hitting the ball. It is all up to you
know, are you a believer or not? Without these superstitions I think many
things would be different, I am a firm believer that there is luck and fate all
around us. Without the superstitions I do, maybe I would not have had my first
grand slam in grade three. If I did not make a wish on eleven, eleven that ball
probably would not have gone three hundred feet away. I mean who knows, what do
you believe?

Hello,
ReplyDeleteI'm not really a superstitious guy but I guess some people are. Like I really don’t get how a person can think seeing a black cat is bad luck for a person, and I really don’t think that palm reading is real but whatever. What do I know that is my opinion thank you for sharing, and I really hope I did not offend anyone in any shape or form.
Thomas, you are allowed to your own opinion and superstitions are all in what you believe. If you do not believe in any of them, thats ok! I don't know what it is, but I have always been pretty superstitious, maybe it is fun to believe is something that is highly unlikely. I do find though, sometimes weird things do happen, but that could just be me being superstititous.
ReplyDeleteNot very superstitious either but I've always found it funny to watch others that are. It's amusing to watch them go out of there way to avoid certain things. I think superstitions are only effective and real if you convince yourself that they are real.
ReplyDeleteRachelle I have really enjoyed all of your blogs! My mom and I are both very superstitious and at the moment she is really into palm readings and things like that too! I'm more into the routine before a sport, I feel like if I wear a certain outfit to a competition or I have a certain color CD it affects my result! Great blogs!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great exploration of various superstitions. I notice that you did not write a blog, focusing on theatrical superstitions. Undoubtedly that was because those superstitions are entirely justified! :) Naturally, refusing to say the name of the 'Scottish play' or whistling on stage is a perfectly rational thing to do, right? Right??
