I was walking around my neighborhood this weekend with the little girl I was babysitting. As we were on our way to the park, I lifted her up and said, "Don’t step on the cracks because it will break your mothers back!" Even I found myself jumping over all the cracks just in case the saying was true. Growing up, when someone told me to jump over the cracks I would, why? Because as kids we don’t know any better and believe any lies or stories we are told. Some of the stories and lies stick and are believable. Someone can be thirty and still believe some of the things your parents told you from a kid. Maybe that is why there have always been superstitions. Another question is why we have superstitions and where they came from. I have always been interested in superstitions and old tales. So when I was jumping over the crack it got me thinking. I wondered why all these superstitions have become so popular, I mean I think everyone knows about the black cat being bad luck, not to step under a ladder, to throw salt over your shoulder.. No one has any explanations why we do it. For the next little bit I have decided to take on the task and figure out the real meanings and real truths to this silly acts we do to keep our good luck. It's interesting to see obsessive people over these superstitions, when they don't even know why they do them. Who knows, we could actually be throwing salt over our shoulders after spilling it just to keep the monsters away. Last time I checked we have no monsters.. Unless you consider school a monster, then that's okay.

Rachelle, I am extremely excited to read this blog! One superstition that I found is the most effective (for myself) is to knock on wood. I would absolutely love it if you explored this superstition. I do not know if it is true or not, however, I have not once gotten stung by a bee; every time I say it I knock on wood. There I go again, knocking on my wooden desk as I'm writing this. That is one superstition that I will always do no matter what, however I am not over the top about superstitions like a certain teacher we both know (wink wink).
ReplyDeleteHi Rachelle! I am very excited to read your blog because as it would seem, I am much more superstitious then I realized. Not so much with the spilling of salt or stepping on cracks, but with jinxes, I am a complete freak. My number one go to superstition is and always will be to knock on wood. I really hope you can explore this superstition because I have absolutely no idea where it came from or if it even works... Well obviously it works... (knock on wood). I am also a little worried to read your blog because I already know that as I begin to read about new superstitions, they will stick with me! I guess we will see if that’s the case!
ReplyDeleteThis is such an interesting topic! When I'm walking I catch myself trying not to step on cracks as well, but I never actually took time to reflect upon why I do this. I look forward to learninng about what is behind these kinds of behaviours and beliefs, as well as where they originated.
ReplyDeleteThank you girls, I am glad i can intrigue the minds of a few, I found myself always knocking on wood too Lauren. It is so bad when someone else says something that could be superstitious, I do not let them do anything until they knock on wood. I feel it will effect me just because tI heard them speak. If you keep reading you might see the knocking on wood soon. I am sure I will do the salt aswell.

ReplyDeleteGreat first post. I'm incredibly interested in this topic, even tough I think superstitions are far fetched and ridiculous. I mean who could possibly be silly enough believe in them?
ReplyDeleteI choose to live only by scientific truths. As long as people never mention the title of the Scottish play, say 'break a leg' before a show and never whistle on stage, then I'm good. But I,m sure those all have solid scientific reasoning behind them, right? ;)
Side note: I'm having a bit of difficulty reading your font + don't forget to add me as an administrator.
